I wrote this song on piano years ago, and it immediately felt familiar. For a long time I figured it had to be a half-remembered melody by somebody else. If it is, nobody has mentioned it to me yet. I was obsessed for a long time with the idea of taking buses and trains to far-off places; I remain so, kind of. I imagined someone with a messed-up past trying to make amends with everyone who'd been important to him, and whom he had therefore necessarily wronged, but there remained this one long-neglected yet somehow most important friend. He knows he'd be an unwelcome visitor but he has to journey across the country to apologize in person. What kind of man would he be if he didn't at least try?
lyrics
Took a train into Santa Fe
woke up an hour before dawn
If I'd known what the road would bring
I never would have gone
But I went to see an old, old friend
whose face I'd nearly forgot
Strange city, watch the sun come up
from an empty parking lot
And the days run away
They're gonna take me down
Just another stray coming round,
I'll go down, down, down,
Down, down, down
To your front door
Just a dream and the smell of cedar smoke
Welcome me to this old town
Twenty-one degrees on a sunny day
Snow in the streets all around
Well if I never tried to knock on your door,
what kind of man would I be?
All I know is I want to see your face
One more time before you set me free
And the days run away
They're gonna take me down
Just another stray coming round,
I'll go down, down, down,
Down, down, down
To your front door
And the days run away
They're gonna take me down
Just another stray coming round,
I'll go down, down, down,
Down, down, down
To your front door
