4. The Great City
[An earthquake abroad, a tsunami headed for our shores, and she woke me in the darkness because she had woken to this news from a dream of a distant earthquake. We dismissed it as coincidence, perhaps intuition, though even then we already felt it was more than that, and we were afraid. When later disasters arrived, first in her dreams and then in the world, sometimes that day, sometimes much later, it became obvious the gift of prophecy had opened up within her. She grew fearful of sleep. She stopped speaking of her dreams. She stopped eating. She did not know what to do. She could no longer pretend. She left and did not know where she was being led.]
