about

I wrote this one on banjo before I had much idea of how to play it. My piano was broken and the $100 banjo I had was stuck in a mysterious tuning and I was so broke that there was nothing to do but play it anyway and see what came up. My head was full of the long tragic stories told in folk songs and my heart was full of resentment against those who had more than I. It was easy enough to imagine one who might carry that resentment into action, and pay a heavy price for it. Years later I found the recording I made that day and I revised it under the heavy influence of Bert Jansch.

lyrics

My girl lives on the other side of town
My girl lives on the other side of town
We meet on Friday night, kiss and tell the summer light
My girl lives on the other side of town

Well I ain't got a dollar to my name
Well I ain't got a dollar to my name
Everywhere I look for work, you know the answer's just the same
And I ain't got a dollar to my name

I'm not gonna stand around while I see them living fine
Not gonna stand around while I see them living fine
Gonna take a piece for me, oh and then my girl will see
I'm not gonna stand around while I see them living fine

They caught me with a gun in my hand
Caught me with a gun in my hand
The judge he called me a thief, but all I ever got was grief
Caught me with a gun in my hand

Waiting for these days to pass me by
Waiting for these days to pass me by
My girl she don't come around, oh the heartache I've found
Waiting for these days to pass me by
